Central Oregon Battering
and Rape Alliance (COBRA)
COBRA'S primary purpose is to provide assistance to victims of domestic
violence and sexual assault and to provide community education to break
the cycle of violence.
Services are designed to help survivors of abuse regain control of their
lives, start the healing process, develop positive self-esteem, and break
the cycle of violence so that future abuse can be prevented.
Services include 24-hour hotline, children’s services, individual peer
counseling and support, emergency victim assistance, individual advocacy,
legal advocacy, systems advocacy, transitional housing, emergency
shelter/safe home, information and referral, school outreach and community
education and training.
Women’s Resource Center of Central
Oregon
The Women’s Resource Center of Central Oregon partners with women in
transition who are choosing to make healthy decisions that benefit
themselves, their families, and the community. They offer life skills
training, personal counseling, resource referral and a place of belonging
and inspiration.
Project Independence
Through Project Independence, Soroptimist International partners with
Women for Women International to support women survivors of war in
Afghanistan, Bosnia and Rwanda. During the past three years, Project
Independence has raised over $1.2 million to provide thousands of women
with the skills they need to rebuild their lives after war.
Meadowlark
Manor
Is a residential program for empowering young women to achieve personal
growth and independence. It is a residential service facility for nine
14-18 year-old females who have become wards of the court and who have
behavior/emotional problems, law violations, drug and alcohol abuse,
education/school failure, family problems, physical and/or sexual abuse,
and untreated psychiatric disorders. SI Bend provides personal gift bags
(soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower caps, toothpaste, mouthwash,
toothbrushes, deodorants, Q-tips, cotton balls, etc.) and free bowling
certificates throughout the year. Meadowlark Manor girls also help with
our Fashion Show fundraiser in March.
Nancy’s House
Central Oregon Community Action Agency Network (COCAAN) Nancy's House
Family Shelter
A family shelter that offers case management, children's programs and
classes for residents. The shelter can house five families for up to three
months, with facilities offering a large kitchen, a separate space for an
overnight manager and a multipurpose room for educational and other
activities. SI Bend provides personal gift bags (soap, shampoo,
conditioner, lotion, shower caps, toothpaste, mouthwash, toothbrushes,
deodorants, Q-tips, cotton balls, etc.) Members of SI Bend donated money
(collected $40 cash), brought stuffed animals, doll buggy, toys, some food
and other donations for the House (videos, towels, laundry soap, bath
tissue, some Christmas decorations) to our Christmas party this year.
These items were also provided to Nancy’s House before Christmas.
Meals on Wheels
Provides nutritional meals delivered to in-home seniors. SI Bend budgets
$150 to provide meals to one female senior citizen for one week.
Head Start
Head Start is a federal program for preschool children for low-income
families. Head Start offers support services and a chance to be
involved in activities to help the whole family in parenting, job
training, learning about health and nutrition and using resources in
the community. SI Bend provides hats and gloves for the cold season,
underpants (for accidents in the classroom), coloring books, books,
wash clothes, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, approximately 600
yards of flannel given to a local high school Home Economics classes
as learning projects to make pajamas. The pajamas are distributed in
holiday gift bags, thus benefiting the school and involving
Soroptimist members with the students and 160 Head Start children.
Habitat for Humanity
Builds affordable homes for families in our community and are supported
largely through the generous donations of local people who believe that
healthy families make a healthy community. SI Bend donates baskets of
supplies to new residents of each home built in our community.

Quadrennial
Projects:
Our new Quadrennial Project, Project SIerra:
a Family and a Future, was launched at
Convention in July 2007. The project will
support women caring for children in extreme
poverty and provide a caring secure family
home for children who are alone or at risk
of abandonment.

Scholarships

Awards
Violet Richardson Award usually $250. Professional Technical Award usually
$500, Women's Opportunity Award usually $500. The Women's Opportunity
Award can be obtained by going to

(left hand menu). The other award applications can be obtained by .
Violet Richardson Award. Applicants are
young women, between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteer in activities
that make the community and world a better place.
Professional Technical Award.
Applicants entering or completing a vocational, professional or technical
training program that leads to a certificate, license or degree that is
not a four-year college or graduate degree. Criteria considered are: the
applicant's aptitude, preparation and/or progress in a
vocational-technical program, and have a financial need.
Women's Opportunity Award.
Women who are entering and/or enrolled in college certificate or degree
programs, are head of a household and have a financial need.
Fellowship Award. The Northwestern
Region offers a $4,000 award to a woman already established in business or
one of the professions, holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree from an
accredited college or university; presents a plan of worthwhile
post-graduate study leading to an advanced degree/enhanced standing or
competence in her business or profession (financial need is not
specified). Soroptimist members and their immediate families are not
eligible.
Making a Difference for Women.
Recognition program (no monetary award by the Club but the SI finalist
receives a $5,000 donation to the charity of her choice). Women are
eligible who are improving the lives of other women or girls through their
professional or person activities. These women have identified and focused
on a need in their communities, which has significantly contributed
to the improvement of women and girls' lives. The majority of the work
should have occurred within the past two years. Previous award winners and
Soroptimist members are not eligible.
